Hydrogen-Powered Buses Set to Transform Columbia, South Carolina’s, Transit by Late 2024

As RATP Dev USA continues to support and maintain The COMET’s fleet, we’re excited to announce the arrival of two new hydrogen-powered buses, set to be in service in late Q3 2024. This milestone reflects Columbia's commitment to advancing clean transportation and aligning with broader environmental goals.

In 2021, The COMET secured a grant to enhance its fleet with both electric and hydrogen-powered buses. Although the buses were initially scheduled to arrive by the end of 2023, their introduction has been rescheduled to late Q3 2024.

Our maintenance team at RATP Dev USA is currently undergoing specialized training to ensure the highest standards of care for these advanced vehicles. Operator training is scheduled to commence in August, preparing our team to efficiently handle the new buses once they are in service.

We’re also supporting The COMET as they finalize the infrastructure for a new hydrogen fueling station. The city’s previous hydrogen station was non-operational, but efforts are underway to restore it with the help of the city’s partner, imaGEN (formerly Trulite). This will ensure the refueling station is operational by the time the new buses go into service.

Hydrogen fuel is gaining momentum as a sustainable energy source for both personal and public transportation. While most hydrogen refueling stations are currently located on the West Coast, there are only two stations on the Eastern Seaboard, both in Canada. By integrating hydrogen buses into the fleet, The COMET aims to significantly reduce pollutants and enhance air quality.
