Washington, D.C. (October 12, 2018) – RATP Dev USA, a national leader in public transit, announced it has been awarded the contract to manage the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) DC Circulator, a bus system for the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C.
DDOT selected RATP Dev USA through a national competitive process that awarded the contract based on best value procurement. Contract services began July 16, 2018 with revenue service starting on October 1, 2018. The contract will cover an initial period of five years with three additional five-year options. RATP Dev USA has appointed Tom Reynolds to serve as DC Circulator’s new General Manager. “"Mayor Bowser has made substantial investments in the DC Circulator and this move to bring direct oversight of the system under District control is a major step forward for DDOT and DC Circulator," said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “We look forward to working with RATP Dev USA, to provide outstanding service to our community.”
The District of Columbia recently purchased 40 new buses, including the largest fleet of electric buses on the east coast, and implemented the first reconfiguration of routes in years.
Under the terms of the contract, RATP Dev USA will directly supervise DC Circulator’s daily operations for six Circulator routes and maintain the 72-bus fleet in support of nearly 5 million annual trips. While the transition won’t impact riders directly, DDOT still encourages riders to monitor DC Circulator’s social media platforms and website for any service advisories.
“We are delighted to bring our world-renowned quality of service delivery to the customers and citizens of our nation’s capital,” said Russ Tieskoetter, Chief Operating Officer at RATP Dev USA. “We will leverage our extensive knowledge to enhance the experience that the DC Circulator provides its customers.” As the city with the nation’s second highest percentage of public transit commuters, the relatively large population comprised of students, working residents, seniors, and visitors, rely on safe, convenient and reliable transit from DDOT to conduct their daily activities. This is RATP Dev USA’s second public transit operation in the D.C. area; since successfully operating the DC Streetcar since 2013.
